Dana Elaine Owens, better than Queen Latifah the United States is an actress and rapper. in film, music and television, Queen Latifah has received 2 Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award and six additional Grammy nods and has been nominated for an Emmy Award. Queen Latifah's parents were Lancelot as well as Rita Owens. Both were police officers. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher who taught at Irvington High School. The couple divorced when Latifah was age of 10. Latifah was a student at a Catholic school and was educated at Newark New Jersey. She was a member of in the Baptist church. In her early twenties, her cousin gave Latifah the name of a stage Latifah which translates to tender and gentle in Arabic. Latifah was always tall, standing 5'10" and was the strong forward for her high school basketball team. In her high school's play she performed "Home" from The Wiz. Latifah started to beatbox for the Ladies Fresh. Latifah used to be a member of Flavor Unit - a group of rappers who gathered around the producer, DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka the 45 King recorded a rendition of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. The recording was given to the host of Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. Dante Ross, an employee of Tommy Boy Music who heard the song, and then was signed by Latifah in 1988, to drop her debut track Wrath of My Madness.
